LASER CUTTING FOR WHAT’S INSIDE OF THE BOX

On 13th April, I did the laser cutting for my MA project. It was really exciting, also I found it is really interesting. I do enjoy it!! It’s really gorgeous, the material that I used called balsa wood. It’s a really light wood, the reason I chose it is because I’d like to use it to create something wearable.

However, I found it’s quite challenge to think outside of the box. Also, how to make these woods to become wearable. The reason I chose this pattern is due to my own culture heritage. But still I need to do more design about how I’m going to bring them to become wearable objects.

THE REFLECTION OF BRONGER AND RAMSHAW

At the moment when I see Bronger‘s work, I felt really shock. How come a person can present jewellery in an unpredictable way? Especially he preformed his jewellery work above 3 decade period of the time, his work might not easy for people to understand due to people may regarded his work as avant-garde art. Or the art trend is searching for the reform. However, by having avant-garde art around us with progress and change, also which requires a spirit of the new. Most of his work impressed me a lot, take ” Diamond Necklace ” 2007 for example, basically it’s a diamond spray which made by diamond fluid (1 ct), plastic dispenser and rubber cord, 80×25 mm (Skeide et al.,2011).

He use goose or duck eggs to present his jewellery, e.g. ” Goose Egg Ring ” 1997 and Brooch ” Wearable Device for a Goose Egg ” 1998 this idea makes me found quite intriguing. According to Gali (2011) “ as the shape already made in each eggs, the shape has a different basis in experience than a created shape. In the point egg is not a depiction of something, it is what it is. The shape is presented, not represented. “ Also, the fascination not just with the shape, but also with the lightness and airiness. From the work of Goose Egg Ring, when it erect, it looks like a hot air balloon (Veiteberg et al.,2011).

The work of Wendy Ramshaw even impresses me, especially the collection of Picasso’s Ladies. Picasso is one of the artists that I admire, since I was a kid I’ve fancied his work. The colours of his work are my inspiration, especially in my previous artwork. I like the way she presents her jewellery. The cylinder as the stage to show her work in the decent way. Ramshaw (1991) says “ I responded only to the image on the card, not to the personal history of Picasso or to prior knowledge of the sitter. I responded only to what I saw – shapes and colours, nothing more. ”. Greenhalgh (1998) says, “ Picasso made art containing ladies wearing jewellery; Ramshaw has made jewellery containing ladies who are art. “. Ramshaw discovered her own language, she created an unique conversation. Her jewellery often predicated on conversation between lines and colours, she brings her own strength to structure the character firmly of Picasso’s painting (Vaizey, 1998). As Picasso (1964) says, “ They don’t invent a type of beauty every year. “, this makes me think that’s the reason why “ classic “ this word exist.

My tutor suggested me to start with a small project, I’m going to create something in a box. To be honest , this method makes me feel excited. At the moment she told me this, there are already have some ideas come up with my mind.

I’ve been started draw some patterns that based from Taiwanese printed cloth.

However, it may be just a concept. I’m going to use Taiwanese printed cloth to present my work. There’s this saying, think outside of the box. But this time I’m going to look inside of the box. Inside of the box also matters, it could be describe as a person’s soul. This could be the reason why I found it’s interning. Sometimes I do found MA journey does help me to know myself more than I used to know.

Taiwanese printed cloth is the main inspiration of my MA project.

As a Taiwanese, a design student. I’d like to promote my own culture heritage to become the main part of my MA journey.

One thing surprised me a lot is there are not many western people know or heard about Taiwan. Taiwan is a really beautiful country, however we didn’t do a lot of advertisement in tourist market. Therefore, I’d like to use Taiwanese printed cloth to become the basic material to express my own country, also I’d like to present it in the modern way.

SIGURD BRONGER – GOLDSMITH ART, COMTEMPORTARY JEWELLERY

“Stay curious, and a pure idea will automatically come to you.”

—Sigurd Bronger

This artist is the one my tutor recommend, the materials that Bronger uses in his work is quite interesting. I found this book in the library. Also, I’ve been read an interview by Olivia Shih, she asked him,

” Your signature work is known for its generous dosage of readymade and surrealism, coupled with a sense of absurdity. Do you approach everyday life with a similar humor? “

The Bronger replied,

Yes! Very often I do. I look around and often find myself in absurd situations. Each new absurd experience teaches me more about myself—through how I react and how I behave.

For some reasons I like the way he answer this question. For artists, everyone has different way to get their own inspiration. Also, every time we create our own work is like we get into a brand new environment which allow us to gain more knowledge by doing it.

“The artist goes through states of fullness and emptiness, and that is all there is no mystery of art.”

– Pablo Picasso, 1954

Today is the first day that I upload my blog after my MA project Task 1 submission day. Recently I’ve been read some books in order to gain more knowledge about jewellery and metalwork. There is a jeweller called Wendy Ramshaw, British. Her work is really impress me, one of the book named Picasso’s Ladies, which introduces plenty of her work. It is really intriguing. The reason for this are Picasso is one of my favour artists. Secondly, some of Ramshaw’s work contents the idea of my MA project. Therefore, I found it is exacting to appreciate her work.

THE REFLECTION OF DOING A BLOG

This is my first research blog, all the articles I post here is one part of the journey of my MA project. By doing this blog, I noticed that my research topic has been changed. It may not change, but the concept definitely changed, and the way I’d like to present it also changed. There are some articles at the beginning, the pictures are in black and white, it because during that period I was kind of get lost. Also, there has been a 2 week gap in my blog in which I didn’t publish any content due to my reflection. I noticed  as a jewellery and metalwork student, it’s better for me to do a Logbook of material samples, textures…etc. However, they are pros and cons in both (Blog and Logbook), on 3rd March, I post an article to show why I decided to do both (Blog and Logbook). I have started taking the photos from my Logbook, then publish them on my Blog.

To me, by doing a Blog this does effectively help me, because I’m able to store my saved the data on the internet. Moreover, I’m able to share interesting videos on my Blog. Another advantage of using the blog is the functional tools since I’m able to find my sources easier by using the customizer setting of it. I hope my audience will found it is interesting to visit my Blog.
